Shift lever repair with material from the "do-it-yourself store"

Article from our technical editor, Christian "Taunusprolo" from Innsbruck.

Here's the "Troublemaker of the Week".

The shift lever looses its hold as soon as the plastic ball-bearing breaks. You can see the rest of the ball-bearing on the paper at the bottom,
(white area with dark spot);-) )

Once again, rest of the ball-bearing, and the lower end of the lever.

The spherical door handle from the DIY-Store recieves a nice hole in the middle. If you can avoid using a hand-drill do so.

Use a mounted one, if you can. This drill was used for illustration in this picture only.

The lever consists of two parts: The upper half (chrome) has a layer of rubber to reduce vibrations. To take it apart, bend away the metal fingers, or drill them away. The rubber also has to be removed, so you can slide on the new sphere and the rest, too.

Here's the lower part (right to left) : doorknob, lower half of bearing, plastic washer and pressure sleeve. The pressure sleeve(not visible) comes last. Put both parts together, include the rubber, and fix it: either with a screw, or with the metal fingers.

Put the lever back in, and screw the lower bearing half on. The pressure sleeve should be fixed later, otherwise it will be difficult. Be careful not to spoil the plastic thread! When the screw is tight, bend the metal fingers down to secure against a loosening from vibrations.Put on the other parts.

To end your job, put the rubber cover back on, and you're done.
